Chong pang food centre is cramp be warned. I tried the roast chicken and honestly, while good, I felt it could use crisper skin, but the meat is surprisingly juicy flavourful. The chicken rice is slightly greasy but definite fragrant and fluffy. For spice lovers, the deceptively mild-looking chili sauce packs explosive heat. Even the accompanying soup, sweet with soft cabbage and served piping hot, is commendable.
Despite hearing great things about Tian Tian, I decided to brave the 15-minute queue. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations. Don’t get me wrong, the chicken rice wasn’t bad, but it didn’t live up to the hype. The chicken was tender and the rice fragrant, but it lacked flavor. The chili was also just average. Still I’d give it a 4*, just not worth jostling over.
I initially thought they excelled only at chicken riceāand they did, with bone-y but tender chicken, fragrant steamed rice infused with chicken stock, and excellent condiments. However, every dish we tried exceeded expectations. The salted egg pork chunks were incredibly succulent. Their large shrimp with broccoli, mushrooms, and carrots was both crunchy, juicy and burting with flavour. Overall, this coffee shop gem along East Coast Road offers above-average fare at very nice price, with comfortable minimal but comfortable outdoor seating. 5* for five stars.
The curry fish head and chicken rice combo at Wee Nam Kee is very good. Not the best rice but everything is done well. Order the chicken rice and add curry fish head for the flavour explosion.
Visited Tiong Bahru market chicken rice after reading that they got the Michelin Bib Gourmand. I waited half an hour (had expected it) to get to the front of the queue. I ordered both the white chicken and roast chicken rice with a side of vegetables. The white chicken, breast meat, lacked the smoothness and tenderness expected. The roasted chicken leg meat, proved smoother and more tender. The rice itself was rather plain, and the soup leaned towards a saltier profile compared to others I’ve sampled. Surprisingly, the standout was the fresh and crunchy vegetables. If you’re at the market to try a variety of local dishes, go for it, otherwise you might want to reconsider waiting twenty minutes for this experience.
BTK, while on the pricier side, is a no-regrets experience. Personally, I favour BTK over other renowned chicken rice places. The signature white chicken is tender and juicy, paired with superb chicken rice. Other dishes like the famous fried tofu and veggies are equally delightful. The other highlight is that they serve other dishes as well so be prepared to leave extremely satisfied.
Lucky chicken rice used to be my go to spot when I worked at Ngee ann city, this small family-run eatery offers Hainanese chicken rice, available steamed or roasted, alongside a limited menu. Prices are budget-friendly, though the food, while good, doesn’t promise any fireworks. The setting is no frills, tidy and straightforward. Note the early closing time and limited drink options. If you crave Hainan chicken rice and find yourself nearby, it’s worth a visit!
Expensive!! but probably the best rice and chilli/condiments. Very clean tasting. Is it 5 or 6 times better than the average chicken rice? I doubt it but thats not the point. Different tastes for different palates.. and wallets.
