About
Head to Orchard Road’s Lucky Plaza and you can’t miss the lunchtime crowds at Lucky Chicken Rice. Located in a corner on the second floor, this spot has been a favorite since 1991. It was founded by 72-year-old Hainanese Loo Liat Wang, who initially hired a cook but soon took over the cooking himself. A decade ago, Loo retired from cooking, entrusting his staff with the kitchen, though he still visits daily to ensure quality. Despite its popularity with tourists, office workers, and locals, Loo’s children aren’t interested in taking over, so the business will be sold once he fully retires. Lucky Chicken Rice is beloved for ticking all the boxes of what makes great chicken rice. Every element—rice, meat, chili, ginger—is thoughtfully prepared and well-balanced, making each component delicious on its own.

Lucky Chicken Rice focuses on what they do best – chicken rice. The steamed chicken is excellent – cooked to perfection and incredibly flavorful. The rice is fragrant and not too oily. They offer all the classic accompaniments. However, the side dishes like vegetables and soups are a bit of a miss. Stick to the chicken rice and you won’t be disappointed. The service is efficient and friendly. The ambiance is clean and casual, with a bit of a local restaurant feel. Overall, a great choice for a classic and delicious chicken rice experience in Orchard.

Lucky chicken rice used to be my go to spot when I worked at Ngee ann city, this small family-run eatery offers Hainanese chicken rice, available steamed or roasted, alongside a limited menu. Prices are budget-friendly, though the food, while good, doesn’t promise any fireworks. The setting is no frills, tidy and straightforward. Note the early closing time and limited drink options. If you crave Hainan chicken rice and find yourself nearby, it’s worth a visit!
