Review: Awfully Chocolate The Petit Cake – A Tiny Dark Chocolate Powerhouse

Need a dessert that slaps you with chocolate before you even finish your first bite? The new Awfully Chocolate The Petit Cake is a tiny powerhouse, perfect for when you want rich, dark chocolate and zero regrets.

Awfully Chocolate knows how to lean into cocoa. But we’re here for something that isn’t your typical chocolate cake – we’re talking about Awfully Chocolate’s The Petit Cake, a 350g little guy that promises to pack a punch. And spoiler alert: sort of.

The Petit Cake Breakdown

With its industrial-meets-wabi-sabi-meets-iphone packaging, you can’t help but wonder if this cake was designed for social media. We’ve spotted it making rounds with influencers on TikTok and Instagram, so chances are, that’s probably the case. But for the record, we paid for ours.

Under the cake lies a secret compartment holding the “premium cutlery”.

Essentially, it is a set of metal (yes, not plastic) 2-prong pastry forks and a little knife.

Visually, this thing is a minimalist’s dream. It’s small, sleek, and almost too serious-looking to be called a cake. Don’t be fooled by its size (15cm by 9cm by 4cm), because this is meant to feed eight.

While one slice is “rich” enough for most, you’re probably going to want to take down at least two slices, restraint isn’t really the name of the game when you’re staring at something this dark and delicious.

The Petit Cake consists of two things: Dark Chocolate Ganache and Black Cocoa Sponge. That’s it. It’s as if Awfully Chocolate decided to remove anything unnecessary so they could flex how serious they are about, chocolate. The first bite delivers on the promise they make in the description – the flavour kicks in fast, like within three seconds. It’s a deep, dark, bittersweet chocolate taste that immediately tells you this isn’t your average Awfully Chocolate cake. It’s for dark chocolate enthusiasts.

The Petit Cake Flavour: Darker, Richer, and Just a Little Boozy

Awfully Chocolate’s The Petit Cake is darker than their original cake, and we can confirm it’s true. This cake is dark. Like, turn off the lights and you’re still biting into shadows-level dark. And it’s not just dark in color – the flavour here is more intense. You’ve got this velvety chocolate ganache that basically feels like you’re eating a block of smooth, sophisticated cocoa. There’s a bitterness to it that some people might shy away from, but if you’re one of those folks who’s always chasing after the highest percentage of dark chocolate, this is your cake.

Here’s where things get interesting: there are these “alcoholic” notes that come through, even though there’s no alcohol in the cake. It’s more like a warmth or a depth that makes you think, “Is there a secret ingredient?” Or did they use so much dark chocolate that you can practically taste the cocoa beans fermenting? That little nuance is what elevates this cake from just another slice of chocolate overload to something that feels more refined. This isn’t a piece of cake you grab in passing; it’s the kind you sit down with and think about while you eat it.

But, keep in mind this is an Awfully Chocolate cake, and you’re going to get that signature American gelatin-esque cake that is “not too sweet”. If you’re not a fan of this type of cake and prefer the decadent, creamy type, please go to a European Patisserie.

The Petit Cake Texture

Texture-wise, Awfully Chocolate’s The Petit Cake balances out nicely between the dense sponge and the smooth ganache. The black cocoa sponge is firm but not dry, giving you just enough resistance when you cut into it, while the ganache on top is basically a chocolate dream – soft, smooth, and melts in your mouth in the best way possible. However, as usual, this thing melts. Singapore’s infamous humidity is not its friend, and if you leave it out too long, you’ll end up with more of a chocolate puddle than a cake. Keep it in the fridge until the very last second.

The Final Bite

So, where does that leave us? The Petit Cake delivers on its promises: it’s dark and full of chocolate flavour that hits you immediately. It’s perfect for people who like their chocolate on the more bitter, “not so sweet”, and there’s that unexpected complexity with those “alcoholic” notes that keeps it from being one-dimensional.

At $38 for 350g, it’s not the cheapest cake in town, and for the right occasion, it’s an “ok” of a splurge. Just don’t expect to feed a crowd with this one, unless you’re comfortable telling everyone to take a really small slice. It’s more of a “Netflix and cake” situation or something you casually bring to a dinner for novelty, rather than a dessert for a big crowd. Think less birthday cake, more “I don’t feel like sharing with more than three people.”  That said, if you want a treat that satisfies the dark chocolate cravings, this cake will do the trick.

Rating: 7/10

Would we get Awfully Chocolate’s The Petit Cake again? Maybe. If we were looking for something small to share with a couple of friends, or something novel to bring to a dinner, it’s definitely a solid option. But for larger gatherings or those wanting something with a little more indulgent, creamy, and in your face, we might look elsewhere.

Awfully Chocolate’s The Petit Cakeis a great cake for the right occasion.

  1. I liked this. Basically this Petit Cake from Awfully Chocolate is not jelak, not creamy, and not so sweet. Perfectly inline with their original cakes. Is it the best Chocolate cake? nope. But it serves a certain demographic looking for the above traits.
