Review: Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang – Michelin Rated Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang is a unique fusion of two beloved Southeast Asian dishes: the classic Malay Nasi Lemak and the Indonesian Ayam Taliwang. The story of this dish began with Mohammed Noorman and his wife, Puti Andam, who met while working as cabin crew.

During a honeymoon trip to Lombok, Indonesia, the couple fell in love with the fiery flavours of Ayam Taliwang, a traditional grilled chicken dish from Lombok. Inspired by this experience, they decided to bring this dish back to Singapore and integrate it with the familiar Nasi Lemak, creating a new dish that would quickly gain popularity.

Imagine tender chicken marinated in a spicy blend that really grabs your attention, but in a good way. This isn’t just any chicken—it’s Ayam Taliwang, grilled to perfection with those distinctive charred lines. It’s served with fragrant coconut rice, crispy fried anchovies, peanuts, a fried egg, and sambal chili that quietly challenges your spice tolerance. This dish has a bit of everything: sweetness, spice, crunch, and a lot of character.

The real stars of the dish are the sambal and the chicken, no question. That sambal doesn’t just pack a punch; it delivers a full-on flavour uppercut that nearly brought tears to my eyes—not just from the heat, but from sheer happiness. Now, I should mention that I’m rocking a solid 3-chilli padi spice tolerance, so if you find it spicier, don’t come after me. The chicken? Grilled to give you that smoky char, though it could’ve been a tad more tender. But hey, it’s the perfect vessel for the Taliwang sauce—a glorious mix of satay sauce meets sambal that just works. It’s this harmony of flavours and textures that keeps folks coming back, even when their wallets start whispering, “Really?”

At $8.20, Sure, it’s a bit pricier than your average Nasi Lemak, but when your taste buds are this happy, who’s counting? Plus, it’s got that Michelin selected nod, so you can feel a little fancy while you sweat through the spice. We kid.
