Review: Pin Wei Chee Cheong Fun (Lau Pa Sat)

Recognized by the Michelin Guide for its artisanal approach to a traditional dim sum dish, Pin wei chee cheong fun serves up delightful bite sized savoury rice rolls that is both silky and delicious.

Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun is a family-run stall that has been recognized in the Michelin Guide for its artisanal approach to chee cheong fun, a simple steamed rice roll dish usually topped with a sweet or savoury sauce. What makes Pin Wei special is that they still make their chee cheong fun fresh in front of you, and offers premium fillings like prawns and scallops. While it may no longer draw massive crowds as it once did – they’ve been taken out of the Michelin Guide– Pin Wei continues to attract a loyal following with its tasty Hong Kong style chee cheong fun and has expanded to several locations like Lau Pa Sat, Bedok and Senja.

Menu

Pin Wei’s menu is short and sweet, with only four options available to choose from:  Plain($3.5), Char Siew($4.5), Prawn($5.5) and Scallop($6.5). We loved how simple and straightforward the menu and price structure was. Ordering was a breeze.

We ordered the char siew ($4.5) and prawn($5.5) chee cheong fun. The blue low-bowls they’re served on are decently sized and you should be able to get about 8-12 spoonfuls per plate.

Taste

On first bite, you immediately get hit by the savoury notes of the house-made soy sauce blend. Then, the smooth, silky texture of the rice vermicelli, together with the gritty sesame seeds, come through. Finally, the fillings introduce themselves to add a satisfying contrast with their firm texture, creating a somewhat harmonious blend of flavours and feel.

I think the secret to Pin Wei chee cheong fun is the soy sauce dressing that drenches the dish. It had the right amount of savoury punch to make you go “that’s nice”. As for the fillings, while you do taste them, they dont shine on their own, preferring to remain in the background. Had the sauce been bland, this whole dish would’ve flopped right from the get go. It’s a simple, yet irresistible taste that leaves you wanting more.

Pin Wei Chee Cheong Fun Review

Pin Wei’s chee cheong fun easily passes the taste test. The house-made sauce hits the mark with the right amount of savoury and saltiness, and the textures from the vermicelli and fillings combine for a satisfying bite. You’ll definitely be going for the second and thirds. Price is fair and portions are somewhat generous. It’s a great choice for breakfast, a side dish or something to share.
