A Legacy of Chilli Crab – Roland Restaurant’s story began humbly in the 1950s along the Kallang River. Mr. Lim Choon Ngee and Mdm Cher Yam Tian, started a seafood stall with just a few kerosene lamps, wooden tables, and stools. Back then, the aroma of sizzling seafood filled the air as dishes were cooked over an open charcoal fire. Their focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients and generous portions quickly drew in a crowd. The menu was kept simple, allowing them to perfect their recipes. One of which, was their now-legendary Chilli Crab. Other signature creations included Black Sauce Prawns, Sambal Mussels, Fried Baby Squids, Teochew Steamed Fish, and a crowd-pleasing Cockles dish with Mdm Cher’s homemade chili sauce.
In 1985, Mr. and Mrs. Lim migrated to New Zealand and passed the restaurant to their son, Roland. Today, Roland Lim, his wife Lilian, and his brother Richard continue the family legacy at their spacious restaurant in Marine Parade Central. The restaurant offers a comprehensive menu, encompassing seafood dishes alongside Cantonese cuisine and a selection of Tim Sum favorites, comfortably seating up to 1100 guests.

Roland Restaurant is a great choice for a special occasion seafood feast. The chili crab, pepper crab, and salted egg squid are must-tries. Just be prepared for a slightly higher price tag, a potential spice overload, and a bit of mess. But hey, it’s all part of the fun!

The chili crab is a must-try, with its perfectly balanced sweet, spicy, and savory sauce. And don’t forget to try the salted egg squid – crispy, flavorful, and addictive!

We ordered the chilli crab and garlic prawns at Roland Restaurant for a casual seafood dinner. The chill crab sauce had a good balance of sweet and spicy, but the prawns were slightly overcooked, making them a bit dry. It’s worth noting that Roland Restaurant is located above a carpark, so keep that in mind to find its location.

Roland Restaurant’s chilli crab is different from others, but in the best way possible! Asked for their original version that had no eggs. This version is mildly spicy and sweet, and less tangy than some, with a focus on rich, savory flavors.

Tried the birthplace of Singapore’s iconic chilli crab. Their signature dish is legendary. The sauce is incredible – sweet, savory, with a hint of spice that builds slowly. The Sri Lankan crabs were fresh and meaty, perfect for soaking up all that delicious goodness. Fried mantou buns are a must-order to mop up every last drop. Highly recommend experiencing a bit of Singaporean history here!

Roland Restaurant is more than just a restaurant – it’s a place to experience a bit of Singaporean history. Their chilli crab is said to be the original recipe, and it’s definitely worth trying. The ambiance is old-school Singapore, with a focus on quality ingredients and delicious food. A great option for a special occasion or a fun night out with friends and family!

This place is a time capsule! Roland Restaurant serves up delicious seafood in a classic Chinese setting straight outta the 80s. Did you know they’ve been around since 1956? Talk about heritage!
The food is fantastic, and they’re famous for a reason – they supposedly created the iconic chilli crab dish! We tried it, along with steamed fish (super fresh!), baby kai lan, and of course, mantou for dunking in that incredible chilli crab sauce. The sauce was so good, we practically drank it all (don’t judge!).

Crabby Cravings Satisfied at the OG Spot!
Heard through the grapevine this place was the holy grail of crab, so I had to check it out. Called to book a table, thinking it’d be a mad scramble, but turns out they had plenty of space (score!).
The vibe? Old-school Canto banquet all the way. Think lazy susans and lots of plates for sharing. But who cares about the decor when the food’s this good? The crab, oh man, the CRAB! Absolutely fantastic. Fresh, perfectly cooked, and messy in the best way possible (think finger-lickin’ good). Everything else we ordered was top-notch too, and the bill didn’t leave us feeling like we needed to take out a loan. Definitely a win in my book! Shiok lah!

Don’t let the location fool you -might be on top of a multi-storey carpark, but it’s worth the climb! This spacious zi char place serves up delicious Chinese food at super reasonable prices. No wonder they have photos of local celebs plastered outside – the food’s that good!
Must-Try Dishes:
Crispy Baby Squid: Forget soggy squid, this is the real deal! The batter is super shiok and crunchy, and the black sauce is confirm power (very flavorful).
Chilli Crab: This chilli crab is a bit different – I could have seriously drank the whole sauce it was so good! The crab itself was fresh and perfectly cooked.
Overall:
Great food, friendly staff, and a bit of old-school charm
